Characteristics of Tibet Import Tibetan Bowls

  • There are different grades of bowls; the “7 Metals” denomination represents the highest quality.
At Tibet Import, we have conducted a composition analysis (see analysis).

  • Composition of high-quality 7-metal Tibetan bowls:

    • Copper (85%) is the main element, responsible for the vibration, giving the sound depth, sustain, and intensity.

    • Tin (15%) provides strength and solidity.

    • The remaining trace elements (less than 1%), such as iron, contribute to tonal richness.

  • Our Tibetan Bowls are made with a significant wall thickness — this is intentional, as thickness directly affects the duration and resonance of the sound.

  • Each 7-metal Tibetan Bowl is handmade, hammered, and shaped by hand.
Small surface imperfections and visible hammer marks are signs of authentic craftsmanship and soft, malleable metal, which allow for deep, long-lasting vibrations.

Your First Bowl:
We recommend that your first singing bowl be a versatile size, ideally between 700 g and 1.2 kg.

Relationship Between Size and Sound in Tibetan Bowls:
Bowls under 500 g produce high-pitched tones, while larger bowls generate deeper and more resonant sounds.

Playing or “singing” a Tibetan bowl is not always easy — it requires some practice and technique.
Start by making gentle, circular movements with light but steady pressure. As you increase the pressure, you’ll begin to hear a soft tone. Once that tone appears, gradually increase the pressure to amplify it.
It’s important that the mallet does not vibrate, which can be achieved by maintaining firm and consistent contact between the mallet and the bowl.

Types of Tibetan Bowls from Tibet Import

There are several quality grades of bowls:

  • 7 Metals: The finest quality, composed of approximately 85% copper, 15% tin, and traces (1%) of other metals such as iron.

  • 5 Metals: Contain a higher proportion of tin, producing sharper tones with shorter resonance.

  • Aluminum Bowls: The most economical; often painted in bright Buddhist colors.

For therapeutic use such as sound healing, we recommend the 7-metals quality.
